Crypt of the NecroDancer – Review

Crypt of the NecroDancer is a rhythm rogue-like that makes you move to the music and kill enemies. In the game you have to match the beats for your movement and attack that was created by Brace Yourself Games. If you don’t get them exactly right you won’t be able to do anything. The levels get a lot harder as you go on and the tracks getting trickier and trickier to match. If you can’t keep up and think quickly then you’ll be dead before the song is halfway over.

The greatest asset of the game is the music that will be stuck in your head for the rest of the day. The soundtrack is made by Danny Baranowsky who is known for his electronic music that sounds like music from our past but with a more upbeat and modern tone. He worked on “Super Meat Boy” and “The Binding of Isaac” which both have really memorable sound tracks, so his music is known to get people right into the game and ready to go. This game is all about moving to the music and finding the beat, so his style fits extremely well with the objective of the game because it is catchy and easy to remember and if you don’t like the track you can swap in your own and it will create a custom beatmap for it.

The roguelike dungeon crawling aspect of the game is really good also. Each level has a group of well made, cool and interesting creatures that are tough to fight while still being enjoyable. Most monsters have pretty unique ways of being killed and if you don’t pay attention to what you’re doing you may end up dying very quickly. The way the music gels with the movement of the game makes you think on your toes and will keep you on the edge of your seat as you wonder around dungeons that are randomly generated but stick to the theme of the level. The art style is really unique and blends old-school graphics with new ideas that lead you to think of the monsters of your childhood games that you battled so many years ago. With it’s four levels that get progressively harder as you advance and it’s many bosses you are bound to get hours of content out of this game. It also has a level editor and a active modding community so you will continuously be coming back to this game to experience what the modders have made and make maybe even make a cool creation yourself.
