Has Assassin’s Creed: Empire Been Confirmed in Watch Dogs 2?

Watch Dogs 2 is filled with Easter eggs, but one of the more interesting ones relates to Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed franchise with the particular Easter egg in question possibly confirming that the next Assassin’s Creed game will be Empire, or at least set in Ancient Egypt.

When players are exploring Sandford University in-game, you will eventually come across a person who is named Elliott Chen. He’s apparently a marketing director at Ubisoft with an annual income of $125,000. Anyway, you can hack his phone, and by doing so you’ll overhear a conversation relating to a game trailer. It’s during this conversation that the Assassin’s Creed franchise is referenced.

“I can assure you, there’s no way the trailer’s getting out,” Mr Chen says to a woman, who we presume is his boss.

“Can you? Can you assure me? After what happened with Unity, Syndicate, Osiris?”, she replies.

Unity and Syndicate are the last two games in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, so our attention is drawn to “Osiris”. But what does that have to do with Assassin’s Creed: Empire?

Anyone familiar with Egyptian mythology will be aware that Osiris is an Egyptian god who is the god of the dead as well as the god of resurrection and fertility. The name would therefore suggest a link to ancient Egypt. Not only that, but back in 2013 there was a leak from Ubisoft that revealed Project Osiris. However, Osiris got cancelled, but it’s rumoured that Ubisoft have used material from the project to help reboot the Assassin’s Creed franchise in 2017.

Assassin’s Creed: Empire first appeared online earlier this year when an alleged Ubisoft employee made an anonymous post to 4chan, revealing that the next game would be set in ancient Egypt and would be titled Empire. Ubisoft decided to give the Assassin’s Creed franchise a break this year to refresh it and get it ready for next year.

We’ll have to wait until next year to see whether or not this Easter egg was deliberately hinting at Empire being true, or if it was instead a light-hearted reference to the recent leaks regarding the Assassin’s Creed series.

Kotaku have an interesting article on the matter and are known for leaking Assassin’s Creed news via their sources. You can check out their article here.
